Sennheiser True Momentum Wireless 2 Headphones [Review]

Sennheiser’s MOMENTUM True Wireless 2 in-ear headphones are Bluetooth-enabled. They’re the Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless’s next version, with active noise canceling (ANC) technology and three extra charges in the carrying case. While they do a good job of isolating you from some ambient noise, their active noise cancellation (ANC) is only marginally better than passive noise cancellation, and their continuous battery life is short. They also lack low bass and have a veiled and bland treble. Fortunately, their companion app has a graphic EQ and presets, allowing you to tailor their sound to your preferences.

Style

The Sennheiser MOMENTUM True Wireless 2 and its predecessor, the Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless, are nearly identical in appearance. Their hefty design sticks out of your ear and comes in black or white with a silver metallic accent. They haven’t, however, lost their previous generation’s luxury appearance. The only noticeable difference is that they have many mic holes on the earbud for their ANC.

Comfort

The Sennheiser MOMENTUM True Wireless 2 headphones are quite pleasant to wear. If you wear them for lengthy periods of time, their bulky design might exert pressure on the inside of your ear and create fatigue, especially if you have small ears. On the plus side, they’re extremely light and come with four different-sized ear tips, allowing you to find the perfect fit.

Controls

The touch-sensitive controls on the Sennheiser MOMENTUM True Wireless 2 are excellent. They’re comparable to the controls on the Sennheiser MOMENTUM True Wireless, but they’re mappable. Most music controls, like as play/pause and track skipping, are located on the left earbud by default, and are activated by tapping: tap once to play or pause your audio, twice to skip to the next track, and three times to skip to the previous track. One tap on the right earbud turns on/off voice assistance, and three taps on/off ANC. All call management is done with taps on the right earpiece. Holding down either the left or right ear to lower or increase the loudness is a simple process.

Portability

Sennheiser’s MOMENTUM True Wireless 2 headphones are extremely portable. They’re a little smaller than the previous generation and should fit inside most pockets and bags with ease. They also include a compact charging case that should fit in the majority of pockets.

Case

The Sennheiser MOMENTUM True Wireless 2 is packaged in a stylish hard plastic container. This sturdy case is made of a grey fabric-like material and should keep the headphones safe from knocks and drops. While there is no lock to keep the case from opening if it falls to the ground, the earbuds are held in place by a magnet.

Build Quality

The build quality of the Sennheiser MOMENTUM True Wireless 2 is excellent. They’re comprised of strong plastic with sleek metal surfaces that also serve as touch controllers. They should be able to withstand a few drops or hits without suffering too much damage. Similarly, the case is well-made. Although we don’t currently test for water resistance, the earphones are rated IPX4.

Stability

The Sennheiser MOMENTUM True Wireless 2 is a reliable device. They don’t have stability fins, but they should stay put during light athletic activity like running. They do, however, protrude a little from the ear and may get snagged when you’re changing your clothes. Fortunately, they don’t come with any audio wires, so you won’t have to worry about a cable snagging and ripping your earbuds out.

Sound Profile

Sennheiser’s MOMENTUM True Wireless 2 headphones have a warm sound signature. They lack a touch of low bass, which may upset EDM and hip-hop aficionados. The treble dip also diminishes clarity, which can be detrimental to material that is more vocal-centric, such as podcasts or pop music. Fortunately, the companion app has a graphic EQ that allows you to tweak their sound.

Bass Accuracy

Sennheiser’s MOMENTUM True Wireless 2 headphones provide excellent bass accuracy. Because the low-bass range is underemphasized, mixes lack some thump and rumble, but the rest of the response is reasonably balanced. Warmth and richness come from a tiny overemphasis in the high-bass, but it shouldn’t make your mix too muddy.

Mid Accuracy

Sennheiser’s MOMENTUM True Wireless 2 headphones provide excellent mid-range precision. It’s flat and even throughout, so lead instruments and voices don’t sound muddy or harsh.

Treble Accuracy

The treble precision of the Sennheiser MOMENTUM True Wireless 2 is poor. The lack of low-treble emphasis can make vocals and lead instruments difficult to understand. Because the mid-treble range is irregular, sibilants like S and T sounds can seem dull and piercing at the same time.

Peaks/Dips

The Sennheiser MOMENTUM True Wireless 2’s peaks and dips performance is adequate. A shallow dip in the mid-mids nudges instruments to the rear of the mix, while a little peak in the high-bass adds a bit of boominess. Vocals and lead instruments sound harsh when the high-mids peak, while their presence and detail suffer when the low treble dips. Sibilants are harsh and piercing due to the spike in the mid-treble.

Imaging

These headphones have excellent imaging capabilities. For the entire range, their weighted group delay is below the audibility threshold, ensuring a tight bass and transparent treble. Also, the frequency, amplitude, and phase response of our unit’s L/R drivers are well-matched, so objects like voices or footsteps are precisely placed in the stereo image. These results, however, are solely applicable to our unit; yours may perform differently.

Noise Isolation

The Sennheiser MOMENTUM True Wireless 2 performs admirably in terms of noise isolation. Unfortunately, their active noise cancellation (ANC) is only a marginal improvement over passive noise cancellation, and certain headphones without an ANC feature, like the Boltune BT-BH024 Truly Wireless, perform better in this regard. Nonetheless, the Sennheiser’s passive and active noise isolation can assist block out mid-range sounds like chatter and lower higher-pitched noises like the hum of air conditioning systems. Even with ANC on, they have a hard time cutting down low-bass noises like bus and jet engines.

Leakage

The leaking performance of the Sennheiser MOMENTUM True Wireless 2 is outstanding. In a reasonably peaceful location like an office, you should be able to listen to your music at high volumes without bothering people around you.

Recording Quality

The recording quality of the mic is adequate. While it’s an improvement over the Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless, your voice remains weak, muffled, and missing in depth.

Battery

The battery life of the Sennheiser MOMENTUM True Wireless 2 is dismal. The manufacturer claims a seven-hour battery life when the ANC is turned off. They provide just over four hours of continuous gaming with ANC turned on, which may not be enough to get you through your workday without stopping to recharge them. The case also carries three additional charges, which is helpful, but the charge period is a little long for the amount of continuous use you get out of these headphones. There’s also no power-saving mode. It should be noted, however, that battery performance varies with real-world use, and your experience may differ.

Bluetooth

The Bluetooth connectivity on the Sennheiser MOMENTUM True Wireless 2 is adequate. You can only connect to one device at a time because they don’t enable multi-device or NFC pairing, and their PC latency is incredibly high, even if you use their aptX codec instead of SBC. When streaming via Youtube on iOS and Android, however, there is no audio lag at all, despite the fact that this software may be adjusting for latency. Other apps appear to compensate for latency, so your results may vary depending on how you use them in real life.

Verdict

For neutral sound, the Sennheiser MOMENTUM True Wireless 2 are unremarkable. Low-bass is lacking, and the treble is muffled and lifeless. However, their mid-range is quite well-balanced, and the companion app has a visual EQ as well as several presets if you want to adjust the sound. Because of their in-ear construction, they can convey sound uniformly between users, but they can’t produce a wide or vast soundstage.
